Cryptocurrencies are all the rage right now. Bitcoin, Litecoin, Ethereum, and all the other altcoins are skyrocketing in value, and more and more people are getting into them every day.
If you're not familiar with cryptocurrencies, they are a digital or virtual currency that uses cryptography to secure its transactions and to control the creation of new units. Cryptocurrencies are decentralized, meaning they are not subject to government or financial institution control.
One of the most popular cryptocurrencies is Bitcoin. Bitcoin was created in 2009 by an anonymous person or group of people under the name Satoshi Nakamoto. Bitcoin is a peer-to-peer currency, meaning that transactions take place directly between users without the need for a third party.
Bitcoin is unique in that there is a finite number of them. The total number of bitcoins that will ever be created is 21 million. This makes them a deflationary currency, meaning that their value tends to increase over time.
Bitcoin is also unique in that it is the first digital currency to ever be used in a real world transaction. In 2010, a programmer named Laszlo Hanyecz paid 10,000 bitcoins for two Papa John's pizzas. At the time, that was worth about $25. Today, those 10,000 bitcoins would be worth about $2.5 million.
Bitcoin is traded on a number of different exchanges, and its value can vary greatly from one day to the next. In December of 2017, the value of a single bitcoin reached an all-time high of $19,783.06. As of this writing, the value of a bitcoin is about $10,000.
Bitcoin is not the only cryptocurrency on the market. There are currently over 1,000 different cryptocurrencies, and more are being created all the time. Some of the most popular altcoins include Litecoin, Ethereum, Bitcoin Cash, and Ripple.
Cryptocurrencies are still a relatively new phenomenon, and their long-term viability is still unknown. However, they are quickly gaining in popularity, and it is likely that they will continue to grow in value over time. If you're interested in getting into cryptocurrencies, it's a good idea to do your research first to learn about the different coins and exchanges available.
